A winter of hardship approaches

Heating oil prices were a couple of dollars a gallon last year. This year they’re hovering around $5 per gallon.1

NYMEX heating oil futures price chart. Futures traded around $2.20 a year ago and this week exceeded $5 per gallon.

The price increases reflected in this bar chart represent strain placed on the shoulders of millions of our neighbors. So many people will go bankrupt to stay warm or freeze to death.

I wish it were different.

Money at terminal velocity

· One min read

If money flows to you faster than it can be consumed, you are capturing societal wealth.

You have not created that value on your own. You have reached financial terminal velocity.

A person can only take so many first-class flights, eat so many Michelin-starred dinners, drive so many luxury cars, live in so many homes at once, or sport so many fashion accessories.

In 2026, that watermark probably hovers between $10 and $20 million per year. Our wealth redistribution rules got eroded to allow individuals to capture far more than that.

Now Jeff Bezos can strap Katy Perry to the tip of his rockets and blow up billions on a random Thursday. Quel gâchis.
